The GRE is an acronym used for Graduate Record Examination, which is a computer-adaptive standardized test in Mathematics and the English language. The exam is globally administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The main purpose of the exam is to assist schools in selecting the best qualified candidates for admission to general graduate programs. The test is also used by graduate schools as one of the selection criteria to determine eligibility for merit-based grants and scholarships as well as teaching and research assistantships.
Brief History of GRE
The Educational Testing Service (ETS) created and administered GRE in 1949. The objective of developing this exam was to measure various writing and thinking skills that have been obtained over a long period of time and that are not related to any particular field of study. This is the reason why this exam is also called GRE General Test. Today, this test is offered as a computer-based as well as paper-based.
